What is Rapeseed and Coconut wax?
When choosing a candle, most of us naturally focus on the fragrance, the vessel and how it will make our home feel. But the wax inside the candle plays an equally important role in how it burns, holds fragrance and changes over time.
At Casa da Luz, our candles are made using a plant based blend of rapeseed and coconut wax. The wax itself is made from rapeseed oil and coconut oil and contains no paraffin, soy, palm or beeswax.
We chose this blend because it complements the kind of home fragrance experience we want to create. Considered, refillable and designed to become part of your everyday rituals.
Rapeseed wax is produced from the oil of the rapeseed plant, which is widely grown across Europe. The oil is carefully processed into a solid wax suitable for candle making.
It creates a firm yet creamy candle wax with a naturally soft appearance. Rapeseed wax is especially suited to container candles because it can provide a steady burn while holding fragrance throughout the candle.
Coconut wax begins with oil extracted from coconuts. Because coconut wax is naturally soft, it is commonly combined with another plant wax to create the right consistency for a candle.
Within our blend, coconut wax contributes to the creamy texture of the candle and supports the way the wax melts and releases fragrance while burning.

Why does Casa da Luz use rapeseed and coconut wax?
It is plant based and paraffin free
Our wax is created from rapeseed and coconut oils rather than paraffin, a mineral wax derived from petroleum.
This allows us to create a paraffin free candle while remaining honest about what is inside it. The wax base is plant based, while fragrance is added separately to create each Casa da Luz scent.
We do not believe that one ingredient alone makes a candle perfect. Its overall performance also depends on the fragrance, the wick, the vessel and the way the candle is burned.
It works beautifully within a refillable candle
Casa da Luz was created around the idea that a candle vessel should remain in your home rather than being discarded once the wax has finished.
Our rapeseed and coconut wax is poured into removable refills that can be placed inside your handmade Casa da Luz vessel. Once one fragrance has finished, the refill can be replaced while the vessel continues to be used.
It creates a more intentional relationship with home fragrance. You keep the piece that belongs in your space and replace only what has been enjoyed.
It creates a soft and creamy finish
Rapeseed and coconut wax has a naturally creamy, ivory appearance. This works beautifully with the quiet, minimal design of our refillable candles.
Because it is a plant based material, its appearance may change slightly as it melts and solidifies. This can include subtle waves, small marks or a more textured surface after burning.
These variations are part of the behaviour of the wax rather than evidence that the candle has lost its fragrance or can no longer be enjoyed.
It supports a considered approach to candle making
Our wax is blended in Europe and made specifically for container candles. Every Casa da Luz fragrance is then tested with its own wick because different fragrance oils can change how a candle burns. A candle is much more than wax with a fragrance added. Every element needs to work together.
Why does natural candle wax can look uneven after burning?
One of the most frequently asked questions about plant based candles is why the surface sometimes looks different after the candle has been used.
When rapeseed and coconut wax melts, it becomes liquid. After the flame is extinguished, the wax cools and forms new crystals as it becomes solid again. Differences in room temperature and the speed at which it cools can leave the surface looking slightly rippled, uneven or textured.
This is usually a visual characteristic and does not necessarily affect the candle’s fragrance or performance.
A textured surface should not be confused with candle tunnelling. Tunnelling happens when the candle burns down through the centre while leaving a substantial amount of unmelted wax around the sides.
A small amount of wax around the edge during the beginning of a burn does not always mean that a candle is tunnelling. The melt pool needs time to develop, and its appearance can change as the candle burns further into the vessel.
If your Casa da Luz candle repeatedly creates a narrow tunnel after being burned according to the care instructions, please contact us. We would always rather look at the candle properly than dismiss a potential performance concern as a natural variation.
How to care for a rapeseed and coconut wax candle
The way a candle is used can influence its performance and longevity.
For the best experience:
- Allow enough time for the wax to melt evenly during the first burn
- Keep the candle on a stable and heat resistant surface
- Place it away from open windows, fans and strong draughts
- Trim the wick before each burn, without cutting it excessively short
- Avoid burning the candle for longer than the recommended time
- Allow the wax to cool completely before moving the candle or lighting it again
- Keep the melt pool free from wick trimmings, matches and other debris

Is rapeseed and coconut wax vegan?
The wax used by Casa da Luz is vegan friendly and contains no beeswax or other animal derived waxes.
Is rapeseed and coconut wax the same as soy wax?
No. Both are plant based candle waxes, but they come from different crops and have different characteristics.
Soy wax is made using soybean oil. Rapeseed wax is made from rapeseed oil, while coconut wax is made from coconut oil.
There is no single wax that is automatically best for every candle. The appropriate wax depends on the vessel, wick, fragrance and desired performance. We selected rapeseed and coconut wax because it works with our refillable system and the considered home fragrance experience we want Casa da Luz to represent.
Are Casa da Luz candles paraffin free?
Yes. Our rapeseed and coconut wax blend contains no paraffin.
We describe our candles as paraffin free rather than making exaggerated promises about candles being completely free from emissions. Anything that burns produces emissions, and fragrance sensitivity can vary from one person to another.
